The Location
The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is one of the top birding locations in Dallas County. Unfortunately, access to the property requires special permission, and is generally by invitation only.
If you drive up to the entrance unannounced, you will be forced to turn back at the security checkpoint. Supposedly this location was more accessible many years ago, but security tightened after 9/11/2001 and has been closed to the general public ever since.
Accessing the property:
Check Dallas Audubon’s Field Trip page and hope for an upcoming field trip. If you see one then RSVP quickly. These trips are usually limited to 15 people. They hosted at least two trips to this location in 2019.
Another place to check for a potential field trip is the Prairie and Timbers Audubon’s Field Trip page. They hosted at least one field trip to this location in 2019.
